THE STORY OF FOVEAUX HARMONY CHORUS

Sisters in Harmony

Foveaux Harmony Chorus is part of a worldwide organisation called Sweet Adelines. The chorus started over 20 years ago and entertains audiences in Invercargill and elsewhere. This is a chorus for women who love to sing four-part harmony without accompaniment. The repertoire varies from traditional barbershop to more modern music and we love to entertain with our music and our showmanship.

Foveaux Harmony Chorus attended the 2024 Region 35 'Soaring Sounds' Sweet Adelines New Zealand Contest in May this year. We were thrilled to place third in the small chorus division and had an exceptional time singing alongside fellow New Zealand choruses.

We presented our annual showcase in September 2024. At this time the Foveaux Harmony chorus Performance Scholarship was awarded. Congratulations to the talented recipient: Maia Fletcher!

In June 2023 Foveaux celebrated their 25th Anniversary. During the event our Director Sarah Rae also received her Sweet Adelines 25 Year pin. Congratulations and thank you to Sarah, and all contributors to Foveaux Harmony Chorus.

SCHOLARSHIP

FOVEAUX HARMONY/ILT SCHOLARSHIP

The Foveaux Harmony Chorus/Invercargill Licencing Trust scholarship is awarded to female singers aged between 13 and 25 and is intended to help further their singing career.

The 2024 scholarship was awarded at our September Showcase. Congratulations to the recipient: Maia Fletcher!

"At the age of 8, Maia embarked on her journey with singing lessons, cultivating a deep appreciation for various vocal genres. However, it was Country music where Maia truly found her rhythm. Her dedication paid off earlier this year when she triumphed at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Maia achieved a significant milestone by winning the Maccas Senior Golden Gig at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, earning a scholarship to attend The Australian Country Music Academy in 2025. Maia was 2023 Intermediate overall Runner up at The New Zealand Gold Guitars, 2024 Southland Musicians Club Vocalist of the Year, and a finalist in the Southland Creative Arts Awards - Emerging Talent Award. Maia is also a finalist in the upcoming New Zealand Country Music Entertainer of the Year Awards.

Maia’s talents don’t stop there. As one-third of the award-winning vocal group The Dollys, she has already made a significant mark.

Now 18, Maia is diving into a Bachelor of Contemporary Music at Te PÅ«kenga/SIT, all while captivating audiences with local bands throughout Southland.

Maia’s mature vocal presence is distinguished by its richness and dynamic range. Her extensive training has honed her technique, enabling her to deliver performances of exceptional quality - a talent widely admired by her peers and audiences alike."

We are, as always, immensely grateful to the ILT for their continued support. The Scholarship operates as a collaboration of the arts; presenting the shared desire of the ILT and Foveaux Harmony Chorus in supporting young women as they develop as musicians and performers.

This year we were fortunate to be joined by special guests including 'No Strings Attached' and Sarah Sarfaiti

and Liv Cochrane as guest adjudicator.

Congratulations to Maia. We look forward to viewing her future successes.
